If you’re a romantic, and you love to eat, then Brussels is the place to come for a Valentine’s weekend break. Belgians love their food. It’s said that they eat out more per capita than any other people in the world. And ladies, remember the saying - a way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.
Romantic Valentine's Weekend in Brussels
Belgians will happily share their favourite haunts, from the tiniest chip stall to the swankiest of restaurants, guaranteed to get you in the loving mood. In fact, the Belgium capital is often a far better place to eat than its more famous neighbour, Paris. It’s a good-looking city, too – don’t listen to anyone who tells you that Brussels is grey and boring. A stroll down elegant Avenue Louise, or chic Rue Antoine Dansaert will quickly correct any misconceptions – and a visit to the Grand Place will make pulses race. Brussels has long been known for its creativity, on show for everyone to see in its many galleries and museums, and in its stunning architecture, plus in the kitchen, of course. Balance all three and you have the makings of the ultimate romantic Valentine’s weekend. Throw in a bit of René Magritte, the king of surrealism and a famous Belgian native, at the Musée Magritte (135 rue Esseghem, Jette) where he once lived contentedly with his wife, and then wander the quiet streets craning your necks upwards to marvel at Brussels’ proud and sensual Art Nouveau heritage. But food is the main reason to come to Brussels. Stock up on buttery, addictive speculoos at Brussels institution Maison Dandoy, which also serve fine waffles in the upstairs tearoom (31 rue au Beurre).
Valentines with Godiva
And live out a Valentine’s day fantasy at Belgium institution, Godiva, which produces some of the world’s finest chocolates, sold at its smart flagship boutique on the Grand Place (22 Grand Place), where you can feast on special Valentine’s pralines such as Bisou, or ‘Kiss’- rich dark chocolate covering matcha tea-infused ganache and hints of macademia, and then warm hearts with Godiva’s superior hot chocolate.
Eat rabbit braised in cherry beer at buzzy local hangout Les Brassins (36 rue Keyenveld, Ixelles), with a side order of stoemp (mashed potatoes mixed with vegetables). Or head to Taverne du Passage (30 Galerie de la Reine), a beautiful, atmospheric Art Deco brasserie serving up Belgian classics in one of Europe’s most handsome covered arcades. Nibble kibbling perched on outdoor stand on a crisp day - superior cod fish fingers dipped in tartare sauce at fish Mecca Mer du Nord/Nordzee (45 rue Sainte Catherine), then follow with some of the world’s best triple-cooked chips eaten straight from the cone at one of the capital’s many celebrated fritkots (chip stalls), such as Frit Flagey, saved by a Facebook campaign.
All this, though, is just the warm up for the weekend’s main event – a romantic meal for two in one of Brussels’ many temples of gastronomy. Comme Chez Soi (23 place Rouppe) has to be at the top of that list, where national hero Pierre Wynants serves up delectable signatures such as pigeon stuffed with truffles in his Art Nouveau-inspired townhouse.
